About the Piece

I wrote this piece for my composition 2/orchestration course my sophomore year of college. The class felt challenging and isolating to me, as I didn't have much experience being in instrumental ensembles (apart from sixth grade band, where I played trumpet), so I went the route of writing for voice with the orchestra. I based it off the poem "Dream Land" by Christina Rossetti, about a woman's journey through a dream to find rest from her troubles and an escape from the physical world. I journey through different keys and moods to reflect this journey. I enjoyed the challenge of orchestration: it felt like an intricate puzzle to solve on how best to set the text, and it only took me 50 hours of work to "solve"!
