Works
up into the silence the green (2024)
based off the namesake poem by e.e. cummings
When your rockstar sister calls you up asking for a piece for her MMus recital, you answer that call. This became my first international premiere, too!
for SATB choir and two solo quartets, estimated performance time ~5:15
I wanted this work to emulate the underlying, cyclic journey of undergoing mental and emotional growing pains through maturity. Writing this piece felt like a form of therapy for myself, as I reflected on my struggles with severe anxiety, questioning my identity on antidepressants, my changing thoughts around religion, and existentialist fears I felt growing up. Written over the course of five semesters in composition lessons at St. Olaf.
Sanctus, Agnus Dei premiered in May 2023, rest of piece yet to be premiered.
for SATB choir, soprano solo, and string orchestra, estimated performance time ~50:00
based off the poem "Sure on this Shining Night" by James Agee
Written my sophomore year of college, just for kicks.
for SATB with divisi, 2 violins, and 1 viola, estimated performance time: ~4:30
Solace: An Emily Brontë Song Cycle (2020)
I. Long neglect has worn away
II. Stanzas
III. The night is darkening around me
This set of three pieces were written and combined as a part of my Comp 1 class my freshman year. The previous semester, I had written the final piece "The night is darkening around me", and when I was in that class, I decided to turn the single piece into a cycle and wrote the other two movements. The juxtaposition of the poetry tells a tale of loss and how the protagonist heals and finds meaning - and solace - afterward.
This set was also selected for the 2022 MN Source Song Festival!
for solo mezzo-soprano and piano, estimated performance time ~8:00
based off the poem "Dream Land" by Christina Rossetti
Written for the final project for my Comp 2 class as my first piece writing for full orchestra.
for solo mezzo-soprano and orchestra, estimated performance time: ~4:15
Based off the poem "When Music Sounds" by Walter de la Mare
Written when I was a senior in high school for Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose, a group I belonged to for thirteen years of my life. This piece is meant to be a little musical adventure, both through the poetry and the harmonization. So honored to not only have this piece performed, but be able to perform it too.
for SSAA choir and piano, estimated performance time ~3:30
